Monica Bennett: I am a Fibre Artist working in my home studio, Feltwork & Fibre Arts, on Pender Island. I began working with fabrics, first making quilts then teaching quilting, but one day my interests just switched. I sold most of my fabric stash and started learning to make wool felt by hand. Now, I have a wonderful wall of wool; in all colours; it looks like a painter's palette. I have made many items in handmade felt: tea cosies, table runners, jewellery and wall art. Currently, my main focus is on wearable art pieces. My wraps and scarves are made with Merino wool, art yarns, hand dyed silk and exotic fibres such as alpaca, mohair locks, bison, and baby camel down. Often, I use iridescent silk chiffon as a material base. Beading and stitchery are added to enhance the designs. As a founding member of the Pender Islands Artisan Cooperative(2001), my work is at the Red Tree Gallery,www.redtreegallery.ca, the co-op's artist run gallery here on Pender Island.
